Hazard Identification

The supporting principal of this assessment is for a rigorous and complete identification and understanding of any hazards or potential hazards and any escalation fault scenarios leading to the hazards associated with the design, operations or processes of an entire site or installation as well as off-site.

Hazard Identification (HAZID) Studies are a high level phase of hazard identification, typically addressing an overall project. The techniques involved use a structured and systematic approach, examining and identifying hazards in each part of a design or modification, both process and non-process. The studies can be undertaken at each stage of a design, from proposal through to complete design.

RAS use a range of HAZID techniques to suit every application in order to communicate important benefits to the client, including enhanced safety, efficiency, operability, hazard awareness and increased process knowledge.

These techniques include, but are not restricted to:

  • Hazard Checklists.
  • Hazard review for existing plants.
  • Previous Incident & Near Miss Anaysis.
  • Task Analysis.
  • Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA).
  • “What If?” studies.
  • Hazard Study Leadership, including HAZOP.
  • CHAZOP.
  • Event Tree Analysis (ETA).
  • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
  • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA).
  • Human Reliability Analysis.
  • Predictive Human Factor Error Analysis (PHEA).

These studies also include performing a site and process inspection to fully appreciate and understand the system, where permitted.
