Major Hazards

Human Factors

Understanding human factors is recognised as being key to avoiding accidents and ill health at work. Up to 80% of accidents can be attributed to human error.

The RAS approach recognises that a number of factors can contribute to an accident, and it is important to consider human factors at all levels.

The HSE Human Factors team is focused on two main areas:

  • Preventing major accidents.
  • Protecting personal health and safety.

For COMAH sites, identification of human factors’ influences on prevention of major accidents is one of the most important aspects of assembling a good quality safety report, and for identifying and reducing the risks.

RAS consider human factors in all stages of the report compilation.

RAS offer the service of Human factors and ergonomic assessments, using recognised techniques such as the HEART methodology.
