Major Hazards

Developing Process Safety Indicators

A challenge that faces many companies is demonstrating that there are systems in place to monitor the performance of key risk control systems.

RAS can assist with the systematic application of process safety indicators to deliver a picture of effectiveness of the companies management of major accident prevention. By developing leading rather than lagging indicators, it is possible to respond directly and immediately when a poor result is found.

The system needs to be layered throughout the organisation with appropriately detailed information on critical risk control systems reported to management throughout the organisational structure.

This requires implementing a number of steps:

  • Establishing organisational arrangements to establish/monitor process safety indicators.
  • Setting up systems to identify critical risk control systems, determine their performance levels, and decide what will be measured.
  • Setting up data collection and reporting systems.
  • Reviewing performance of the monitoring system, the scope of the indicators, and the tolerances set on specific measures.
